Wind Power Explained
As fossil fuels continue to have a significant impact on our planet, the need for more sustainable energy sources is evident. Clean energy sources such as solar energy and hydropower have become increasingly popular in recent years. Another popular clean energy source is wind energy.
What is wind energy?
Wind power is harnessed by turning a wind turbine’s propeller-like blades around a rotor, which powers a generator and creates electricity. Wind turbines have been used on farms and homesteads for centuries, mostly for grinding grain and pumping water.
The United States is home to one of the largest and fastest-growing wind markets in the world. Wind energy makes up nine percent of the United States’ renewable energy generation and 24 percent of the world’s renewable energy generation capacity, making it the second most widely-used source of renewable energy. Today, over 68,000 wind turbines across the country are generating clean, reliable power.
Jobs in wind energy
In 2020, the U.S. wind industry supported nearly 117,000 jobs across all 50 states, including 24,000 wind manufacturing jobs at over 500 facilities. Wind turbine technician is the second fastest-growing job in the country, increasing by 68 percent over the next decade. The U.S. wind industry employs America’s veterans at a rate 67 percent above the national average.
